About Piling Cranes and their Rope

Piling cranes now come in various formats thanks to technological advances and tend to differ in how the piles are driven down, hammering (driven piling) diesel and hydraulic hammers are examples.

Here we tend to refer to the original hammering – driven piling crane which uses a heavy weight and a hammering action to drive in the piles held by the main hoist rope.

Typically use two wire ropes, one for the driven pile hammer and one on the main load handling hoist. We have 10 options for the hoist rope; see here for a further 8 for the Auxiliary (AUX) Pile hammer rope.

Piling Crane Hoist Ropes Available

All the following ropes are Rotation resistant and have been compacted. Compaction reduces internal friction on the wires whilst also filling in voids between strands. Compacted ropes have smaller diameters than non-compacted ropes with the same strength, they also run more smoothly over drums and are more resistant to crush damage.

The rotation resistance is afforded from the specific constructional lay. Each rope will have two or three layers which have been laid in alternate directions so that when loaded and the forces are applied on the rope the torque created in each layer will counteract each other and prevent unwanted spin.
