Dockside and Ship Crane Ropes

Dockside and Ship Crane Ropes

Both dockside or harbour cranes and ship cranes utilise similar steel rope as they both have a hoist and boom which need ropes and they are used in similar environments. Ropes for the hoist have a much higher number of wires, are rotation resistant, compacted and have a Warrington steel core.

Ropes for the boom are mainly plastic impregnated ropes for optimum performance, however we also have a number of parallel closed ropes which have a very high breaking strength but must only be used when anchored under tension at both ends.

Dockside Crane Ropes

Unloading a ship can be quicker when using a dockside crane. In order for the dockside crane to operate safely and at maximum efficiency, they have been designed to work in relatively close proximity to one another, so several cranes can be operating over any one ship at the same time. Dockside crane ropes are paramount to their efficiency.

Full gantry cranes require the use of incredibly strong wire rope. These cranes use a system of cables to support massive loads, they typically have a main hoist rope and a boom rope. The guidelines for lifting operations in ports and docks should always be adhered to.

Dockside cranes are also found in the form of container cranes or ship-to-shore-cranes which consist of a supporting framework able to traverse the full length of a quay.

Ship Crane Ropes

Ship cranes or floating cranes sit on a ships deck and specialise in lifting extremely heavy loads often whilst at sea, or even on construction projects close to the water. Shipping cranes are also used for material handling in harbours & ports.

Shipping cranes are as well used in offshore construction such as the building of oil rigs.

One of the main advantages to using floating cranes is their immense flexibility. They can literally transport loads to virtually any location required.

These cranes also use hoist ropes and boom ropes; the hoist ropes do the lifting whilst the boom ropes handles the boom/mast movement.

Corrosion protection for Steel Ropes

Harsh environments will usually require a galvanized rope for lifting purposes. This helps protect the rope against rust and corrosion in applications where moisture could damage the rope. Where applicable, plastic impregnation (PIR) can also be considered.

In order to minimise the effects of corrosion we also recommend selecting a wire rope with a suitable manufacturing lubricant. Regular re-lubrication of wire rope is also essential in order to make sure there is minimal abrasion to the rope that could cause potentially hazardous wear and tear.
