About Steel Mill Crane Hoist Ropes

Cranes are typically used for lifting and transporting metals in various forms. One of the most common cranes associated with a steel mill is the ladle crane which handles molten metals. Other cranes are used to feed pig iron into furnaces or for extracting solidified metals.

Many cranes and their ropes will be used in high heat areas and so should be chosen accordingly and lubricated in high temperature grease on a regular basis.

Steel Mill Hoist Ropes Available

We offer two key types of steel rope for use in steel mills. Remember it is your responsibility to ensure the rope is suitable for use in the environment, conditions and is compatible with your crane size.

Each rope has fully compacted strands to reduce voids and finished with a plastic filler between inner and outer layers to completely fill any remaining voids. Compacted ropes enable smaller diameters to be used whilst enabling smoother handling over sheaves and drums.

The filling of the voids through compaction and plastic filler significantly reduces wear and abrasion to the internal wires, thus creating a more wear resistant, stronger rope with a longer working life, subject to usage.

8 Strand Plastic Impregnated Rope

These ropes are compacted with plastic impregnation and are intended for heavy duty use on guided systems only.  

9 Strand High Performance Plastic Impregnated Rope

These ropes are compacted with plastic impregnation and a Warrington core. With all the benefits of the above plus the addition of a Warrington core for optimum handling, better rope behaviour and optimum strength.

We can also terminate any rope with a fitting of your choice in our rope workshop for a bespoke hoist rope. Our choice of rope constructions include standard ropes, compacted ropes, rotation resistant ropes , plastic impregnated ropes and ropes with a Warrington steel core. Typically used on cranes for hoist, boom, trolley or auxiliary ropes.
