Load binders provide a convenient way of securing loads on a vehicle with the use of steel chain.
There are two key types of load binder, the simplest in terms of design is the lever load binder, although more physical effort is required to operate than the second type – the ratchet load binder.
The ratchet load binder variety uses a ratchet and pawl method to crank the chain tight, this method reduces the amount of physical effort required.
In this category you will also find chain and hooks for use with our load binders as well as simple tie down rope.

A lever load binder uses a simple over centre lever mechanism and incorporates two hooks which are used to fit to a link in the chain used as the cargo restraint.
There will need to be a little slack in the chain to do this. Attach the hooks into chain links some distance apart, then the lever can be pulled which will pull these links towards each other as it snaps past the centre point, thus tightening the chain over the load.
See the images on the lever load binder product page for further clarification.
Once you are happy and the load is secure the lever should always be secured back to prevent and snap back/recoil. You can anchor the lever back with a piece of rope or wire or similar.
It is worth noting that you can't fine tune the tension with a lever load binder due to the fixed tension design.
The ratchet variety of load binder works in a similar way to the lever load binder when fitting. However it is much easier to use and tighten thanks to the ratchet mechanism with finer adjustments, unlike the standard lever variety.
Simply crank the lever back and forth to pull the hooks and chain together. There is no risk of snap back or loosening with this type thanks to the ratchet locking into place. This is a popular choice of load securing on heavier, industrial transport.
Along side our load binders we can also supply suitable chain with safety hooks in many sizes and lengths.
8-10mm or 10-13mm chain in grade 80 is typically used for standard lever load binders.
Ratchet chain binders have a wider range of chain size options, typically up to 16mm, thus will suit heavier loads.
It is essential to match the chain strength and size with the load binder strength and hook sizes to ensure a secure, safe cargo securing set up.
Our tie down rope is a three strand split film polypropylene and can be supplied in any length up to the full 220 metre coil. There is also a choice of rope diameter which ranges from 4mm up to 12mm. Find out more in the product page above.
