Here at Rope Services Direct we realise that the wire rope industry can be “jargonised” at times. Therefore we have produce this Rope Services Direct Ltd Glossary of Terms article which we hope will prove valuable in case we use a term which may not be readily recognisable.
Rope Services Direct Ltd Glossary of Terms
Abrasion – frictional surface wear that the wires have suffered.
Aggregate Strength – the total strength of the lifting medium which is worked out by totalling the individual breaking strengths of each strand.
Balustrades – a balustrade is a railing that can either be used to prevent people from falling or as a decorative instalment, balustrades are commonly used in stairways or in garden decking. We supply a number of balustrade fittings, such as rigging screws and swage forks, as well as the rope to accompany it.
Bending Stress – the stress that a rope will suffer if bent or curved.
Breaking Strength – Also meaning actual strength, this is the ultimate load at which a sample of the material being tested breaks.
Cable – cable is a term that is loosely applied to rope and wire strands.
Cargo Straps and Ratchet Straps – strong straps that are used to tie down cargo.
One of the many uses for the material
Cord – the definition for small sizes of fibre rope.
Core – the centre of a rope, around which the strands are laid.
Corrosion – when part of the wire in the rope has chemically decomposed due to moisture, acids, alkaline or some other form of destructive agent.
Efficiency – the ratio of the material’s aggregate breaking strength and its actual breaking strength.
End Termination – the end part of the lifting piece which has been permanently fitted with a tool that can connect it to the load.
Fibre Centre / Core – rope that has a centre / core comprised of vegetable or synthetic fibre.
Fibre Rope – wire-based rope that is made from fibre which has been twisted into yarns. We stock nylon, polyester, and polypropylene fibre rope.

Galvanized Steel – galvanized steel is steel that has been covered with a protective zinc coating to prevent rusting. This is different to stainless steel in that the steel itself would rust without being galvanised, whereas stainless steel naturally does not rust. Galvanised steel is cheaper than stainless steel, and is also stronger.
Inner Wires – refers to all wires of a strand, excluding the outer wires or cover wires.
Lifting Gear – lifting gear is equipment that can be used to lift heavy loads, which include manual chain blocks, lever hoists, and push travel girder trollies. Rope Services Direct are a sister company to Lifting Gear Direct Ltd.
Line – another term for the lifting medium.
Outer Wires – refers to all wires on the outer layer of a rope.
Rope Splicing – the joining of two ropes or two parts of the same rope by untwisting the two separate parts and weaving them together. This is done to form a stop at the end of the line, for forming a loop or an eye in the rope, or to join two ropes together.
Stainless Steel – stainless steel is a type of steel that contains chromium, and is, therefore, resistant to rust, tarnishing or stains.
Wire Rope – a type of cable which consists of several strands twisted around a central core to form one robust piece of rope.
