Fibre rope is the earliest type of rope which has been used for hundreds of years, way before recorded history began; however with modern technology fibre ropes are a far cry from the very first ones, which were just fibrous material twisted together these included grasses, hair, reeds and leather.
The fibre rope you usually see today is either made of natural plant fibres, such as cotton, jute, sisal and manila; or man-made synthetic fibres made from chemical compounds, such as polypropylene, nylon and polyester.
Both types of rope have a vast array of uses from the huge ropes you see on large ships to the very small twines used for crafts and packing, even shoe laces are a form of rope. Some ropes are used for a specific task, such as mooring rope, others are used for aesthetic purposes often in the home and garden.
Wire rope was the next progression from fibre ropes; often made in a similar way, twisting strands together. Wire rope however provides a rope with much stronger lifting capabilities than fibre rope, this is often why it is so commonly used across the lifting gear industry for lifting heavy loads, such as on cranes.
In our modern times the form of all types of rope has progressed hugely; there are many different forms of rope now that have been twisted, plaited or braided in different ways to produce ropes with differing properties suitable for various tasks. The way in which it is made produces rope from sturdy, solid ropes, to very soft and flexible rope, some are stronger than others, some more flexible and some will have more stretch qualities.
So when you are looking to purchase a rope of any kind make sure the kind you choose will be able to withstand the operation it is to be used for.
