Following on from the last news page we will now look at turnbuckles, rigging screws, sockets and terminals.
Rigging screws & turnbuckles have a fixing point at each end and are fixed to the end of a wire rope which then allows the other end to be fixed to another wire rope or an anchoring point, the centre section can then be turned to tension the rope. These fittings are available in various styles with different end fittings to suit different purposes, some have the same fitting either end whilst some can have different fittings on each end. These types of end fittings are ideal for applications where tensioning of the rope is of the upmost importance; for example bridge wires, staircases, hanging shelving, and barriers.
Sockets are used to fix the end of the rope to a suitable anchor point and are used for applications such as; towing ropes, anchor cables on oil rigs, bridges and roof constructions. Sockets are available in various forms; commonly open or closed, spelter or wedge.
Terminals finish a wire rope end off nicely and are used for attaching the rope to a fixing point, there are many kinds of terminals available to suit various purposes, there are threaded, fork, eye, rod, stud and toggle terminals and are often used in conjunction with rigging screws to provide the different end fittings.
