Units 16 & 17 The Wallows Industrial EstateFIBRE ROPES........THE MAN-MADE KIND
During this news and information page we will look at nylon, polyester and polypropylene man-made ropes, along with some basic information on how they are made, their properties and where they might be used.
POLYESTER rope can be found in use around dockyards, for mooring ropes, fishing nets and rigging, but are also commonly seen on vehicles, for towing, and in factories as rope slings for lifting.
As polyester rope is made from petroleum based chemicals, (which are heated to an extremely high temperature causing a chemical reaction, then producing polymers/strands which are then made into the required materials) it is superb at resisting sunlight, is easy to wash and is fast drying; polyester rope also has good resistance to chemicals and oil, mould and mildew and abrasions.
Polyester rope has very little stretch qualities and therefore will not fare well with shock loading; but has excellent strength qualities, which is not lost when wet. This rope is soft to handle and is easy to splice with a variety of end fittings.
POLYPROPYLENE rope, or polyprop as it is often called, is possibly the most commonly used all purpose man-made fibre rope today, especially in the marine, boating, and seafaring industries, as well as water sports. It is the only rope that will float, is lightweight, flexible and does not shrink. Polypropylene is also very resistant to oil, acids and other chemicals. However polypropylene rope can deteriorate in sunlight but a UV stabiliser can be added to alleviate this.
Polypropylene rope is usually the cheapest man-made rope making it extremely popular and can be, and is used for pretty much anything.
Polypropylene is made from heat treated chemicals to form polymers which are then manufactured into either fibres or plastics.
NYLON rope is extremely strong, and good for absorbing shock loads, as it can stretch, but also has the ability to return to normal when the load is removed. Nylon makes a robust rope which normally outlives most other ropes, as it is resistant to sunlight and chemicals
Nylon rope is commonly used for towing, fishing, climbing or lifting but is used in many more areas too.
Like the other manmade fibre ropes, Nylon too is made from chemicals that are super heated to make a chemical reaction, which results in molten nylon, this then undergoes another process whereby it is forced through a spinneret, which as the molten nylon hardens produces thin strands/fibres, which then can be made into the required material, in this case rope.
