WIRE ROPE CLAMPS / CLIPS (also known as Crosby clips or dog clamps)
A wire rope clamp / clip, is used to fix the loose end of the loop back to the wire rope. Usually consisting of a u shaped bolt, a forged saddle and 2 nuts. The 2 layers of the wire rope are placed in the u bolt, the saddle then fits over the wire ropes on to the bolt, the 2 nuts then secure in place. 3 or more clamps are often used to terminate a wire rope.
SWAGED TERMINATIONS:
The swaging method refers to the installation technique of the wire rope termination.
The purpose of swaging fittings is to connect 2 wire rope ends together, or to terminate one end of the wire rope to something else.
Presses are used to compress and deform the fitting to create a permanent connection. There are many types of swaged fittings, i.e. threaded studs, ferrules, sleeves, sockets, fork /eye terminals, turnbuckles and rigging screws.
WEDGE SOCKETS:
A wedge socket termination for wire ropes can be useful when the fitting needs replacing often, i.e. if the end of the wire rope is in a high-wear area, the rope may be trimmed periodically, necessitating in the end termination to be removed and re-applied. A good example is on a dragline, where the end loop of the wire rope enters a tapered opening in the socket, wrapped around a separate component called the wedge. This arrangement is knocked into place, and the load gradually eased onto the rope, as the load increases on the wire rope, the wedge becomes more secure, gripping the rope tighter.
POURED SOCKETS:
Poured sockets are used to make a high strength, permanent termination. Poured sockets have a conical cavity in the line with the intended direction of strain. The end of the wire rope is inserted from the small end with the individual wires being splayed out inside the cone. The cone is then filled with molten zinc, or an epoxy resin compound.
EYE SPLICE:
An eye splice may be used to terminate the loose end of a wire rope when forming a loop. The strands of the end of a wire rope are unwound a certain distance, and plaited back into the wire rope, forming the loop or an eye creating the eye splice.
