As the ends of wire ropes can fray easily, and can't be connected to other equipment easily, an end termination in the answer.
There are different ways of securing the ends of wire ropes to prevent this fraying. The most commonly used end fitting for a wire rope is to turn the end back to form a loop, the loose end is then fixed back on to the wire rope. When the wire rope is terminated with a loop, there is a risk that it will bend to tightly, a thimble can be attached inside the loop to preserve the natural shape of the loop, and protect the cable from pinching and abrading on the inside of the loop. In industry the use of the thimble is the best practice as the thimble prevents the load from coming into direct contact with the wires.
As a substitute for hand eye splicing the talurit clamp is excellent, an aluminium alloy, steel, or copper ferrule is passed over the end of the rope then the end of the rope is re-inserted in the ferrule forming an eye, or over a thimble. The ferrule is then placed in the swaged press and pressure applied to cause the metal to flow around both parts of the rope, resulting in a very strong and neat termination.
Other wire rope end fittings are
wire rope clamps (dog clamps, Crosby clips)
Swaged terminations
Wedge sockets
Poured sockets
Eye splice
