There are two classes of fibre rope; natural and man-made.
Natural fibre ropes are produced from plant fibres, such as sisal and manila, hence the natural name. The fibres can be made up in different ways i.e. twisted, braided or plaited, to produce rope with various qualities. Natural fibre rope can be used for many different purposes, such as decking rope, towing rope, climbing rope and also for ropes used within the marine and shipping industries. Natural fibre ropes do, however deteriorate over time due to continued saturation, micro organisms and chemical contact. They are however resilient to sunlight and salt water. One of the other main characteristics of most natural rope is their stretch qualities which make them more suitable for some purposes than others.
Man-made fibre rope such as polyester, nylon and polypropylene are all produced from various chemical compounds which make rope with different qualities. Standard polypropylene rope for example can deteriorate when constantly exposed to UV light, but this can be overcome by having a UV stabiliser added at the time of manufacture. The main benefit to polypropylene rope is that it is the only man-made rope that is buoyant. It is also resistant to oils, acids and other chemical substances, is lightweight and flexible making this the most popular man-made fibre rope.
Polyester ropes are resistant to UV light, quick to clean and dry and also has a good resistence to chemicals, moulds and mildew etc. This rope has very limited stretch qualities, yet has good strength that will not be lost when wet. Polyester is soft to handle and easy to splice.
Nylon rope is amazingly strong and can withstand shock loading due to its stretch qualities and it will also return to its natural length when the load is removed. Nylon is UV and chemical resistant and frequently utilised for fishing, climbing, towing and lifting etc. This rope probably has the best longevity.
