Wire ropes of all types are used on a daily basis in the modern world, from crane ropes for lifting to holding up suspension bridges, and even for decorative purposes in the contemporary home. So how did wire rope come about? A German mining engineer came up with the idea when he became fed up with constant breaks in the fibre ropes used to haul up the materials from the mine and decided there must be something stronger, this was during the early 1800's. Initially the thin metal wires were wrapped together with hemp fibres but they soon progressed to twisting the wire strands around a hemp core and subsequently around six of these strands were twisted round another hemp core in different directions to provide stability.
Some year's later wire rope underwent rapid progression and was mass produced in the United States for the first time and thus the first wire rope suspension bridge was successfully constructed.
Today there is a huge array of wire ropes on offer for different purposes. They are produced in slightly different ways to give the ropes different properties. The wires can be twisted, braided or plaited in different ways and directions, some will possess no centre core and some will have a core made from either fibre or additional wires. Each process will change the main characteristics of the rope, including its strength, stretch and flexibility in addition to its resistance to certain elements and so then they become more suitable for specific purposes.
