This post briefly looks at some basic wire rope care and maintenance guidelines.

Firstly, do you know the dimensions of your rope, if not then you should, measure the rope with special callipers as shown, it is very important to make sure that the rope is measured at its widest part, not across the flats of 2 strands because this will give you the wrong, undersized diameter.

wire rope can be easily damaged by incorrect uncoiling, causing kinks that are often beyond repair and so scrapping that length of rope. If the rope is coiled, you should roll out the coil, much like rolling a child's hula hoop, never try to pull on the end of the rope as kinks will almost definitely occur. If the wire is on a reel, then the reel should be mounted to turn freely so that the rope can be gentle pulled out across the top of the reel, it should never be pulled out from under the reel, or by pushing the reel across the ground; another mistake is to try to throw loops of rope from the reel, this is dangerous to people due to flick backs and damaging to the rope.

One of the most important maintenance tips for wire rope is to keep it well lubricated. All wire rope is internally lubricated during the manufacturing process but should be re-lubricated at regular intervals to prolong the life of your rope. Lubrication helps to protect the strands and internal wires from rubbing together and so producing both internal and external wear.
