Unlike normal wire rope, the plastic impregnated variety has all the gaps and voids within the rope injected with a thermo-plastic substance; This filling will provide a protective layer in-between all the individual parts within the rope.
Plastic impregnation protects the rope from dirt and dust penetration and other corrosive materials, and also from internal wear from friction between the strands, and so greatly prolongs the life of the rope. Plastic impregnated wire rope has no stretch qualities because the thermo-plastic sticks the strands together; this is hugely beneficial for rotating ropes too as this process prevents the rope from twisting apart. An additional benefit is their bend qualities, the plastic filling reduces wire contact bending stresses and so improving load transfer and sharing between wires and strands. This results in continued flexibility, much more resistant to shock loading and a great increase in the working life of the rope.
Plastic impregnated wire rope is commonly fully coated with this plastic, this can reduce flexibility and make inspection difficult and so will not be appropriate for use in some applications, however when completely coated the wear in much reduced when used with sheaves and pulleys because more surface area makes contact with the groove and so reducing contact and pressure wear .
Plastic impregnated rope is often used on mobile cranes, piling operations, coal and ore unloaders and also extreme operations where the rope is highly exposed to high levels of corrosive substances, dust and dirt and water as well as applications with high wear levels.
