Understanding Wire Rope - The Basics

Posted : Thu 17th May 2012

Wire rope is a type of cable which is made up from many tiny metal filaments that are twisted and braided together to form a thicker strand, these strands are then also twisted and/or braided in various ways to produce specific types of wire rope for different purposes. The outer strands of the rope (the sheath) are often twisted around a core section of further braided strands.  The action of the twisting and braiding of the wire strands around a core produce strong and flexible wire rope which has an abundance of uses.

Today, wire rope is usually produced from steel or stainless steel, though has been produced from iron in the past. Sometimes additional alloys may be added to the manufacturing process to further enhance the wire ropes properties for specific tasks.  Modern wire ropes of today are often galvanised allowing them to be used outdoors with a much reduced risk of corrosion, if they have not been galvanised they are called bright rope, and are fine for mainly indoor use.

Wire rope is commonly used on a daily basis in a wide variety of areas including: the lifting gear industry, construction, farming, architecture, shipping, forestry, fishing and many more, due to the fact that wire rope is extremely strong and durable and available in many sizes and lifting capacities, it is also aesthetically pleasing on the eye, especially the stainless steel variety.

There are many features of wire rope to consider prior to purchase, these are: diameter, breaking strength, corrosion resistance, bending ability/flexibility, crush resistance and average lifespan. In many cases wire rope is used to lift and hold heavy loads and therefore the most vital aspect is how it will operate under strain.  Where pulleys, chains and weights are used with the wire rope , an industrial engineer needs to work out the precise kind of wire rope, and only that size, weight and braid of rope should be considered to make sure that it is not going to fray of break. You should always identify the breaking strength of the rope, and never use it in a way that could cause injuries, talk to a wire rope specialist if you are unsure whether your rope can be used for the task required, as many ropes are for specific applications because of their different make-up, and properties. It needs to be well matched to all pulleys and rigging equipment used to prevent damage to the rope and risk of personal injury.
