Units 16 & 17 The Wallows Industrial EstateThere are many different types of rope available today; here we will briefly look at some of the common types and their main uses. Man-made, natural and wire rope.
Man-made rope such as those made from polypropylene, polyester or nylon for example are often available in different colours which can not only make them look more appealing but also allows them to be easy to distinguish, so for example on a boat mooring line may be blue whereas sail rope may be red. These man-made ropes are commonly used within all marine and water-based industries including water sports and fishing; due to strength, buoyancy and water and rot resistant properties. Manmade rope is also commonly used for climbing and mountaineering because of their strength, lighter weight and flexibility. Some types of these ropes, particularly the polyester type are used for vehicle towing and for lifting slings within factories. Some manmade rope is also used for decking ropes, barrier ropes and decorative purposes. All these manmade ropes have various properties, some the same and some different making them more suitable for various applications, please see other news pages for the properties and characteristics of each type.
Natural fibre ropes such as cotton, jute, sisal and manila are produced from plant fibres and again each has its own characteristics (see other news pages for more detail). These types of rope are commonly available in thicknesses from 2mm up to 40mm in diameter. These natural ropes are used for an array of applications from packaging twine to mooring ropes, and from the agriculture to construction industries. They are also still very popular for around decking areas as many people still prefer to use natural products in their garden.
Wire rope is robust and frequently utilised for lifting applications across many types of industries. Yet due to the way wire rope is made there are various types available, suitable for different purposes, from huge crane ropes to very thin wire rope used for architectural and aesthetic purposes such as to support hanging shelving or balustrading up stairs. So you can see that wire rope can be used for many purposes, but probably one of the largest areas where they are used is within the lifting gear industry, utilised for lifting very heavy loads. Other areas include; manufacturing, deep sea fishing, forestry, farming, shipping, building and even fire fighting.
